Direct Payment Prepaid Cards

A Direct Payment Prepaid Card is used like a debit card and is the new way for us to make a Direct Payment to you. You can use it to pay for the things agreed in your Care and Support Plan.

Who can have a Direct Payment Prepaid Card?

Anyone who has been assessed as eligible to receive a Direct Payment will be offered a Direct Payment Prepaid Card.

If you already get a Direct Payment, we may offer a card to you at the time of your review. You can also let us know if you are interested in switching over to a Direct Payment Prepaid Card using the contact details below.

How it works

We will discuss all the options with you and if your circumstances suit having a Direct Payment Prepaid Card, we will make the arrangements for you. We will write to you confirming the Direct Payment amount and when you can expect to receive your first payment. Your Direct Payment Prepaid Card will be posted directly to your home.

With a Direct Payment Prepaid Card you do not need to set up a separate bank account for your Direct Payment.

What happens next?

Every month, we will transfer the amount of money allocated to you directly into your Direct Payment Prepaid Card account. And you can use the Direct Payment Prepaid Card just like a debit card to pay for your care and support:

  • You can use the card to pay for services in person via chip and pin
  • You can use the card to pay for services over the telephone or the internet
  • You can make bank transfers or set up standing orders or direct debits for regular payments
  • You can choose to use either the online banking or telephone banking service
  • And you can get your balance by text message to your mobile phone.

The Direct Payment Prepaid Card is not a credit card. This means that you cannot go overdrawn and only use it as long as there is money in the account.

What are the benefits?

  • Much quicker to set up than a separate bank account;
  • No need to send in bank statements and receipts making it much easier to manage; and
  • An additional card can be issued to someone who helps manage your direct payment or makes transactions on your behalf.

The prepaid card will be issued by Prepaid Financial Services (PFS). You will be able to access your account, top up your money, and see your balance through their website. They have a call centre who can help you.
