If you are having difficulty preparing a cooked meal we can arrange for hot or frozen meals to be delivered to your home. Community Meals, often known as 'meals on wheels', can help ensure that people receive proper nutrition on a daily basis, whatever their circumstances.

Community meals

All the meals are nutritionally balanced, cooked locally and delivered hot to the home in foil containers. We recommend that you eat the meals hot, soon after delivery and do not try to reheat them. A typical meal will consist of a hot main course of meat or fish with vegetables and a hot or cold dessert. Diabetic, Low Carbohydrate, Low Fat, Soft Diet, Gluten Free and Low Sodium, as well as Vegetarian, Halal, Kosher, Asian and Afro-Caribbean meals are also available.

The Council works with the community meals supplier Sodexo who can deliver hot or frozen meals to your home. Hot meals can be delivered daily or frozen meals are provided on a fortnightly basis. Sodexo have a wide range of meals to cater for all dietary and cultural needs.

They may also be able to loan you a table top freezer and microwave to store and heat your frozen meals. This equipment is loaned for free and the driver can show you how to use it safely.

If you are unable to heat frozen meals by yourself we can arrange for a care worker to come and help you. You could also ask a friend or a relative for help.

We may also be able to provide a small piece of equipment to help you prepare cooked meals yourself at home.

How it works

If you or a family member or friend has problems getting the right level of nutrition and would benefit from receiving community meals, you will need to contact the Council first. They will discuss your situation and the type of difficulties you have and what type of service you need. If you decide you would like to use the community meals service they will ask Sodexo to get in touch with you to make the arrangements.

How much does it cost?

Costs are reduced for anyone using the community meals service. The cost you will need to pay for a two course frozen meal is £3.55 or £6.75 for a hot meal.
