5 Steps to wellbeing

Evidence suggests there are five steps we can all take to improve our mental wellbeing

If you give these things a try, you may feel happier, more positive and be able to get the most from life:

  • with the people around you, such as your family, friends, colleagues and neighbours
  • at home, work, school or in your local community
  • invest time in developing these relationships.

Be active

  • step outside into the garden
  • go for a walk or a run
  • go cycling or play a game
  • find an activity that you enjoy and make it a part of your life.

Keep learning

  • try something new
  • so why not sign up for that cooking course or learn to play a musical instrument?
  • set yourself a challenge that you will enjoy
  • learning new skills can give you a sense of achievement and make you more confident.

Give to others

  • do something nice for a friend or a stranger
  • even the smallest act can count, like a smile, a thank you or a kind word
  • volunteer your time or join a community group
  • kindness and helping others can be incredibly rewarding and help create new connections and social networks.

Be mindful

  • take notice and be curious
  • be more aware of the world around you and your feelings
  • take the time to enjoy every moment
  • reflecting on your feelings and experiences can help you appreciate what you have and change how you approach challenges.
