Traineeships and apprenticeships

Whether you're just leaving school, have been working for years or are seeking to start a career, traineeships and apprenticeships may be able to give you the skills you need.

Traineeships

Traineeships are now available for 16 to 24 year olds. They provide tailor-made packages of support that will give you the confidence, skills and experience to compete for jobs. They are designed to prepare you for apprenticeships or employment with training. They are similar to study programmes with more emphasis on quality work experience. Traineeship programmes can take anything up to six months and include a mixture of:

  • Focused work preparation training - e.g. CV writing, interview preparation, job searching and inter-personal skills.
  • High-quality work experience - giving young people real-life work placement to enhance their skills and confidence.
  • English and maths - for young people who have not achieved a GCSE grade C or equivalent or better.

Apprenticeships

As employees, apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. Off the job, usually on a day-release basis, apprentices receive training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications. Anyone living in England, over 16 years-old and not in full-time education can apply. Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of Apprenticeship, the apprentices’ ability and the industry sector. All Apprenticeships include the following elements:

  • A competencies qualification
  • A technical knowledge qualification
  • Either Key Skills, Functional Skills or a GCSE with enhanced content

Apprenticeships are open to all age groups above 16 years-old whether you are just leaving school, have been working for years or are seeking to start a career. You just need to be living in England and not taking part in full-time education.
